How Mold Can Impact Your Health

Mold does not look attractive and can sometimes put out an odor, but it is much more dangerous than that. Mold can also impact your health and can become a serious problem.

Allergic reactions are the most common threat that mold presents. Most people experience systems such as sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes and throat and sometimes skin rashes. Long exposure can cause these symptoms to become severe. Asthma attacks can be triggered in those with allergies and asthma. Allergic reaction systems and illness can still occur in individuals without a specific mold allergy. Young people and elderly with compromised immune systems can be in serious risk of developing dangerous lung infections and other lung related conditions.

While allergies can be pesky, mold is more than just irritating it can be life threatening! Hypersensitivity pneumonitis occurs when exposure to mold spores causes the lungs to become inflamed. This chronic inflammation can cause irreversible scarring of the lungs that may severely impair breathing and functionality. If a person leaves the infected environment it is not guaranteed that their symptoms will demolish. There are other diseases and illness caused from mold that can cause permanent damage to your body. It has been suspected in instances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It is important for babies with developing lungs to be clear of infestations to prevent serious illness and control risk for sudden infant death syndrome.

People who have had specific hazardous types of mold infestations containing black mold typically report signs of headaches, trouble concentrating, dizziness and allergy or flu like symptoms. Usually symptoms will decrease once a person is no longer around the mold, however immune system problems can linger for longer periods of time. Have you noticed symptoms while in your home and less when you are away? If you have noticed cold symptoms only in your home or for an unusual amount of time in you or a family member, look into clearing your home of mold. Mold can hide in your home! You can’t always see the mold in your home, and this is why it is essential to act quickly when it is seen. How Smoking Can Impact the Odor of Your Home

smoking

Smoking in the home leads to a very serious and lingering odor. If you have recently moved into a home or an apartment and you find the past residents smoked, you will probably want the unpleasant odor gone right away. If you have quit smoking, congratulations. The next thing to do is remove odors from your home. Green Home Solutions provides our clients with information on the impact of smoking in the home.

When a person smokes, tar and other tobacco substances are released into the air and stick to just about everything. They stick to furniture, cabinets, rugs, walls and hard to reach areas such as the ceiling. Removing smoke odor from your home is not an easy task but there are a few things that you can do on your own to help. For unneeded small household items such as old newspapers, it may be best to throw them out since it will be difficult to completely remove the odor.

The first step is to air your home out, open all doors and windows to let fresh air in. Air fresheners can be used to temporary relieve unpleasant smells, but will likely wear off quickly. It is important to start with washing home fabrics such as bedding, rugs, blankets and curtains in baking soda and detergent. Next layer a mixture of baking soda and water over mattresses, carpet, curtains, or any other large items that won’t fit in a washer machine. Baking soda with a steam cleaner will likely remove obnoxious odors from large materials. Let the baking soda sit on your large fabric furniture for approximately an hour before rinsing. Removing smoke odor from walls and hard surfaces will require cleansing and scrubbing with a vinegar and water. Vinegar mixtures work well to remove some of the odor from your walls and hard surfaces but it will be tough to completely remove the unpleasant smoke odor. Do not forget to scrub and wipe down the windows and doors, this can be a great place for pesky odors to linger.

Cleaning, scrubbing and washing will becoming overwhelming very quickly and even after all your hard work the smoke odor may still remain. It can be very frustrating to work this hard and find the odor is still lingering. Air fresheners will only work for so long and they do not truly fix the problem. Do not mask the odor: get rid of it with expert help. At Green Home Solutions we provide ingredients that attack the odor and consume the odor particles completely without leaving a chemical or perfume smell behind. Our experts are professional, educated and friendly. We our locally owned and operated and will make sure you are completely satisfied after the service is completed. We pride ourselves on outstanding customer service. At Green Home Solutions we proudly service all of Central Kentucky, including Lexington, Versailles, Georgetown, and Nicholasville. Call Green Home Solutions today to allow our professionals to make odor removal a simple and satisfying experience for you.

Everyone wants their home smelling fresh and clean at all times. But sometimes there can be odors lurking in your home that you don’t even notice! Your nose can go “blind” to certain smells in your home. And after a while, you won’t notice any smell, whether it be good or bad! But that doesn’t mean that new guests in your home can’t smell bad odors. Unpleasant odors are so striking and pungent that it’s often the first thing that someone notices when they first enter your home. No one wants their guests to be greeted with a foul smell when they walk in. If you think your home smells a bit funky, you may need an odor control treatment. So how do you know if your home needs an odor control treatment? At Green Home Solutions, we’re here to tell you how. We want to make sure your home always smells pleasant for any guest who walks in. Now all you’d have are two very powerful smells competing with one another. This is a smell overload for your nose! Just covering and masking the bad smells in your home just simply does not solve the problem. You have to get to the root of the cause. So it’s really important to solve this problem as soon as possible.

How to Get Rid of Foul Smells

What You Need to Know About Mold

mold

Mold problems in your home or business can be very stressful. With Green Home Solutions we want to offer you the best experience possible with our mold removal treatment. What do you need to know about mold before contacting us to remove it from your home?

Mold is a type of fungus, and it can be prevalent both indoors and outdoors. It can grow in numerous areas and on many different kinds of surfaces. Mildew is a common mold known by many people, as any area prone to moisture can harbor mold. Mold reproduces by the production and release of spores that travel through the air; if your home or business is contaminated, there is a good chance that you are breathing in the unseen spores.

You can’t always see the mold in your home, and this is why it is essential to act quickly when it is seen. Mold can grow on walls, in air vents, or on the edges of flooring but it is not always visible. Sometimes even with visible mold, you might not realize it is even there. Mold can look like white threads or like black and green-gray spots or clusters. Mold hiding behind wallpaper can even look pink, orange or purple. Many times a home or business owner does not recognize what they are looking at when they see mold growth. If small amounts of mold are seen it is very important to act quickly to remove all of the mold, visible or invisible. If there is visible mold it is very likely there is a larger mold colony growing out of sight.

Mold is dangerous. It is associated with many different health issues, symptoms, and illnesses. Mold in your home can be very serious for elderly people with respiratory problems and it can also be very harmful to children and babies with developing lungs. People who have had specific hazardous types of mold infestations including black mold typically report signs of headaches, trouble concentrating, respiratory problems, dizziness and allergy like symptoms. Usually symptoms decrease once a person is no longer around the mold, however immune system problems can linger. If your symptoms increase in severity when in certain buildings or areas it is possible you could have a mold predicament that needs to be treated promptly. It is important to act quickly when dealing with mold to prevent illness and infections.

Mold can ruin your furniture. Couches, carpets and tables can be attacked and ruined with mold. It may be hard to clean, and once it is cleaned it may not be possible to return your furniture back to its original beauty. It can be frustrating and costly to replace items in your home or business that are infected with mold.

The Difference Between Mold That Is Black and “Black Mold”

removing mold

Having mold in your home is never good, but it doesn’t have to be a death sentence for your house. However, it is something that you want taken care of as soon as possible. Because let’s be honest, nobody likes icky, potentially dangerous mold invading their beautiful homes and clean air! At Green Home Solutions, we want the air in your home to be as fresh and as clean as it can possibly be. So if you’re having a mold issue, don’t worry. We’re here to help you out!

Mold in the Media

As we all may know, the media can blow things a little bit out of proportion sometimes. And the same is true when it comes to talking about “deadly” black mold. This type of mold has gotten a bad reputation from over exaggerations in the media. While this mold can be extremely dangerous to your health, some types of black mold aren’t necessarily as lethal as the media plays it out to be. If you see mold that is black in your home, you don’t have to panic. Mold that is black in color isn’t always deadly to your health. In fact, it might even be close to harmless. That’s why it’s important to understand that there is a difference between mold that is black in color and “black mold.” But regardless of whether or not it’s potentially toxic, it’s still definitely not something you want growing in your home!

How to Tell the Difference

So now you might be asking yourself, how do I tell the difference between black mold and mold that is black? The answer is simple: you can’t. This answer may be troubling to hear, but it’s the truth! According to Moldman, there are more than 100,000 species of mold that come in just about any size, shape and color that you can imagine. This is why it makes it nearly impossible to tell the difference between toxic black mold and mold that is black just by looking with your naked eye. To be certain about what type of mold you have, it needs to be tested in a lab with a microscope. Only then can you be 100 percent certain. But if you can already see the mold growing in your home, it makes testing it pointless. The only thing that you can do at that point is to get rid of it! And at Green Home Solutions, we can help you do just that.

Black mold is a little misunderstood to say the least, but we hope that we’ve cleared things up for you a little bit. All mold, regardless of color, should be removed from your home safely and as soon as possible following the Mold Removal Guidelines. So, if you’re having a mold problem, count on Green Home Solutions to help you out. We’re located in Versailles, Kentucky, but we also proudly serve Central Kentucky including Lexington, Georgetown and Nicholasville.

Mold is a tricky and pesky problem in the home. While molds are part of the natural environment and can be found anywhere, it becomes a serious problem when mold begins to grow within the home. While many people believe they know the basic way to remove mold in the home, there are quite a few misconceptions that everyone should know to ensure that they are removing the mold properly. Green Home Solutions of Versailles, Kentucky, we want you to be aware these common misconceptions about cleaning mold to protect yourself and your home.

Misconception #1: Mold only grows and thrives in moist areas of the home.

Unfortunately, mold is not this simple. While it is true that mold needs moisture to begin its growth, mold does not require moisture to keep growing. The moisture in the area can be completely dried out but the mold will continue to grow once it has started. Mold is an interesting substance in that once it has begun to grow, it takes in the moisture that is found in the air to thrive. If the humidity in your air is below 4% then mold will not thrive, but this is impossible to achieve without using absorbing or drying agents and sprays.

Misconception #2: Bleach is a cure all when it comes to mold.

Nope. While bleach may appear to rid the area of mold, bleach does nothing to clear the area of mold that will grow in the future. Bleach is only good for combating the stain that mold produces, which is what we all associate mold with. Bleach only gets rid of the color that we can see by stripping the melanin composites from the mold membrane. While this will cause the mold to look like it has gone away, it is still lurking, invisible to the human eye and in the same spot you just bleached. In addition to not being effective on mold, bleach causes mold to grow back stronger and more prepared to resist the chemical components of bleach. Because bleach has such a high pH, mold will grow back with exoenzymes which will make the bleach completely ineffective the next time it is used and cause the bleach to become fuel for the mold to grow quicker and spread farther. OSHA and Clorox have both stated that bleach should not be used to clean mold.

Misconception #3: Black mold is toxic or deadly.

No. This misconception actually contains two incorrect ideas about mold. First, mold is not toxic. Some forms of mold can produce toxins, but the actual mold is not poisonous or toxic. They can however cause extreme allergic reactions which can be incredibly harmful. Second, as stated above, mold produces melanin composites which can turn several colors depending on the environment in which it grows. Mold is commonly found in black, white, green, brown, and yellow colors. Color should not be associated with the hazard levels of the mold. All colors of mold are bad and can potentially be harmful.

If you have a mold problem in your home and you do not know how to properly remove the mold, it is necessary to call a professional to handle to issue. It should be one of the happiest days of your life: you’ve just moved into a new home. Whether it’s your first home or your fiftieth, moving into a new home is always fraught with excitement and challenges, some of which can be unforeseen. One you may never have expected can actually be one of the most serious: mold. While it may not seem possible, mold can actually come included as part of a brand-new home. The best weapon against unforeseen challenges is staying informed, so the mold experts from Green Home Solutions of Central Kentucky are here to make sure you stay ahead of the curve.

How does mold get in new homes?

Mold is something that we typically associate with older homes, ones that have leaky plumbing and lots of damp, dark corners. But you don’t need to live in a Victorian mansion to have to worry about fighting off mold. InForum believes that modern building practices contribute heavily to the proliferation of mold in new homes. It can sneak in on building materials, and if left unnoticed can easily spread. Moisture during construction can also lead to unexpected mold growth. And, if either of these things occurs, it is unlikely to be found before you move in. Why? When most contemporary homes are built, they are made so “air-tight” that no moisture can escape. Because of this, you may be moving into a home that already has a resident: mold.

So what do you do?

The first step is simple: don’t panic. While you may feel cheated for moving into a home that already has a mold issue, you are unfortunately not alone in this, and this may not be an oversight on the part of your builders or realtors. With that out of the way, instead of allowing yourself to be bogged down with frustration, be proactive. Contact Green Home Solutions of Central Kentucky as soon as you think your home may have a mold problem. This is one problem that will only get worse the longer it remains untreated, so you will want to act fast. Get your home tested and treated quickly and safely so that you and your family can finally make your new house a home without worrying about mold.

Are you worried that your new home may have a mold problem? Are you unsure? Contact Green Home Solutions of Central Kentucky today to get your home tested and inspected. Our highly trained, friendly professionals will make sure that your home is safe and ready to live in. Although we are located in Versailles, we proudly serve the greater Central Kentucky area, including Lexington, Georgetown, and Nicholasville.

Remodeling After Mold Restoration

Mold in your home is no laughing matter. Exposure to it can cause a wide range of dangerous health reactions in people, and with 24 species of mold currently being identified as potentially toxic, it’s important to have your home inspected if you think you may have an issue. We recommend not trying to remove the mold yourself because you can inadvertently spread the airborne spores to other parts of the house. Green Home Solutions in Versailles, Kentucky can inspect your home for mold and remove it professionally and without any danger to you or your family.

Once the mold has been removed, remodeling is often necessary to get your home back to how it was before. The method Green Home Solutions uses is less invasive than methods used by other companies, resulting in less remodeling being needed. However, it’s still important to make changes to your home to prevent mold from invading again.

Mold needs moisture, food, and the right temperature to grow, so eliminating these items during remodeling will help ensure your home stays mold-free in the future.

Bathrooms are the perfect place for mold growth because they are often wet, warm, and humid. Once a mold issue has been remediated, have an effective fan installed to help remove the steam from hot showers or baths. If there is a window in the bathroom, ensure it is in working order so it can be opened to let warm air out and cooler air in. Leaving wet items laying in a heap encourages mold growth; encourage family members to hang up towels for better drying by installing extra towel bars or hooks, and make sure any leaky pipes behind walls or under sinks are repaired.

[/fusion_text][fusion_title margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” size=”3″ content_align=”center” style_type=”default” sep_color=””]Basements[/fusion_title][fusion_text]This is probably the first place that comes to mind when mold is mentioned – the dark, wet, leaky basement. And unfortunately, mold does frequently grow in this part of homes. If mold has been found and treated in your basement, make sure the source of the moisture is removed, such as having your basement waterproofed. Replace carpeting with hard flooring to reduce moisture retention and make minor leaks easier to identify and clean up. Paperless drywall removes the paper that mold feeds on and is more moisture-resistant. Mold inhibitors can be added to paint to increase your protection even more.[/fusion_text][fusion_title margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” size=”3″ content_align=”center” style_type=”default” sep_color=””]Kitchen and Living Areas[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

Kitchens are another area which is frequently damp and humid due to cooking and dishwashing. If they don’t already, have your appliances—such as your stove and microwave—vent outside, not into your attic. Replace your hood vent if it is not effective and check for leaks around your sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator if it has an ice maker and water dispenser.

Proper air circulation can help inhibit mold growth; arrange your furniture in living areas so registers and air return vents are not covered. If a brown spot appears on your wall or ceiling, don’t just have it repainted or replaced, make sure to have the cause of the issue repaired too. It might be a small leak in the roof or your gutters may be backing up because they are clogged.

If you suspect you have mold in your Lexington or Central Kentucky home, contact Green Home Solutions for an inspection and potential removal.
